Preparing to Serve Now the setter has moved into the front row and your team must play with only two hitters in the front row. The setter and outside hitter will switch positions so that the strong side hitter will be in a better position. Also, notice that in the back row, with three players, the outside hitter and opposite setter are up to cover close balls and angle shots while the middle blocker stays in the back and covers long balls, picking up the trash. After the transition, the setter slides over and has three good options to set: short to the middle, long ball to the outside, or set the outside hitter in the back row for a crowd pleasing back row attack.

Preparing to Serve In this rotation some coaches keep the setter in the middle position as this is a natural setting position. However, this pulls the middle blocker out of position. What's better is to have the middle blocker and the setter switch positions. Notice also that in the back row, the opposite setter sets up close to the net and after the serve the middle blocker in the back row will slide over and cover the back. After the transition, the front row middle blocker and outside hitter back up and the setter has the option to set the middle, the outside hitter or a back row attack from opposite setter.

Preparing to Receive In this rotation, the setter slides into setting position. Things are not good in that your strong side hitter is on the wrong side. However, the setter still has the middle attack and back row attack options.

Preparing to Receive Unlike when serving, when receiving a serve, I like to keep everyone where they are. The middle blocker will approach at an angle and hit middle, the outside hitter hits normally and the setter has two options in the back row attack, the opposite setter and the outside hitter

Receiving the serve Is a snap, the middle blocker and hitter are back to help pass and the setter is up at the net preparing to set. The setter again has an excellent selection of setting options. The middle blocker and outside hitter are out of position so this is a great time to run the cross or "X" plays. Also, the setter has the option to set all three hitters in the back row for a back row attack.
